It’s not everyday a major league team enters the realm of social commentary. Then again, as anyone in Cubdom knows, the Chicago Cubs are no ordinary baseball team.
Take for example this past week. The Cubs have lost games they should have won, won games they should have lost and along the way found their consistently inconsistent stride. We’ve seen fielding faux pas, late-inning collapses, a walk-off win and enough extra-inning baseball to bring out the nail-biter in all of us.
Somehow, both the Cubs and its loyal fan base has survived. The thin line between love and hate also exists in baseball. As any baseball fan knows - it all comes down to execution.
Q. Who said the following quote: ”We could have had a few more urns if we would have executed.”
- A Blackwater representative on interrogation techniques
- A member of the Texas Parole Board
- George W. Bush
- Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella
- The Chicago Sun Times
If you guessed none of the above you’d be correct. If you guessed Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella you’d be close. And if you guessed the quote appeared in a Sun-Times story on Chicago Cubs baseball you’re obviously an avid reader with great retention.
As Cubdom knows by now, Lou has shown a unique ability to express himself these last two seasons. Afterall, last year Piniella warned giddy Cub fans to avoid the Google eye as the club closed in on the post-season.
While I’m confident Piniella said “runs” not “urns,” admittedly there have been times where Lou has looked mad enough that bodily harm may have crossed his mind.
For now, it looks like Chicago Cub baseball is safe from the urns. But about that execution…
