Cubs Seek to Commit Cardinal Wins

Today is the first day of the beginning the Chicago Cubs baseball survival.

Not.

Chicago Cubs LogoSt. Louis Cardinals LogoAs the Cubs begin tonight’s weekend series with the rival St. Louis Cardinals, there’s an abundance of baseball pundits that would like Cubdom to believe that the fate of our favorite team’s season hangs in the balance of the next three games.

How ridiculous. Yes, these next three games are important to the Cubs ride to the post-season, but so were those two losses to the Washington Nationals way back in April.

Did the recent sweep of Boston by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays bring an end to the Red Sox reign as defending World Series champions? Anyone who believes that shouldn’t be allowed to handle fireworks.

Like the Cubs, Boston has been banged up. Consequently leading to being banged around by teams good, bad and otherwise.

It wasn’t that long ago - April to be exact - when these same baseball brainiacs were proclaiming the Arizona Diamondbacks as the National League’s team supreme - virtually assuring anyone who would listen that the D’backs were heading to the World Series.

Has anyone of them looked at the standings lately? Arizona is sitting atop the NL West alright - with a 43-43 record. Hardly a record that qualifies a team automatically for a championship of any sort.

The bigger question for Chicago Cubs baseball is how Carlos Zambrano’s shoulder holds up. Or whether Alfonso Soriano can be productive when he recovers from his broken hand.

For now the Cubs-Cardinals rivalry is just that. To portray it as a survival test is merely more media hype to feed our baseball diets.
