Weather or Not

Chicago Cubs baseball manager Lou Piniella doesn’t strike me as the type of man to make excuses. In fact, Piniella strikes me as a rational, reasonable man.

But like any sentient human being, when the stench becomes overwhelming the only logical response is to rip up the carpet and start looking for the corpse.

Piniella has watched for the better part of the Cubs first 17 games his offense look more like dead men walking than run machines. So for myself, Piniella’s perspective on the Cubs hitting woes is perfectly acceptable, exquisitely rational.

He’s done what any person in his right mind would do in searching for an explanation.

Blame it on the weather.

Why not? It’s as good as reason as any why this group has only been able to produce more than five runs in seven of the 17 games. While the Cubs are averaging better than four runs per game, consider 21 of those tallies came in two games.

But I’m in Lou’s corner. Like any true Cubbie fan I’m pulling for the boys in blue against the dark skies the wind blowing in.

I believe in a rational discussions based on empirical data to prove or disprove a point. That’s why I’ve provided this handy chart below:

Cubs Hitters vs. The Weather
Date Opponent Runs Scored Temperature Result
04.02 Cincinnati 1 72° L
04.04 Cincinnati 4 39° W
04.05 Cincinnati 2 35° L
04.06 Milwaukee 9 Indoors W
04.07 Milwaukee 6 Indoors W
04.08 Milwaukee 9 Indoors L
04.09 Houston 3 39° L
04.10 Houston 2 47° L
04.13 Cincinnati 5 51° L
04.14 Cincinnati 7 46° W
04.15 Cincinnati 0 50° L
04.16 San Diego 12 58° W
04.17 San Diego 3 59° L
04.18 Atlanta 6 69° L
04.19 Atlanta 3 70° W
04.20 St. Louis 1 60° L
04.21 St. Louis 6 70° W

If you can trust the numbers here’s what I’ve determined when the temperatures are between:

  • 30° and 40°: 1-2
  • 41° and 50°: 1-2
  • 51° and 60°: 1-3
  • Above 60°: 2-2
  • Dome Games: 2-1

As you can see the numbers don’t lie. As Chicago Cub fans we have only one choice. Put a lid on Wrigley Field.
