Forget about the Curse of the Billy Goat. This year’s haunting of Wrigley Field and points beyond is the Chicago Cubs bullpen.
I haven’t decided yet whether they’re bad magicians or apparitions. Cub relievers have been mostly successful at making things disappear - like leads and balls flying out of the Friendly Confines.
What’s puzzling is they begin their trot out of the left field bullpen, looking and acting like major league pitchers. Once on the mound, their appearance is usually short lived and they vanish into the bowels of the Chicago Cubs dugout.
Unfortunately, their appearances are more ghastly than ghostly.
And they come back. Like a bad penny or ex-lover.
Tonight, Cub relievers appeared and reappeared like every game since the 2007 season began. The end result a near duplication of Sunday’s extra inning loss to St. Louis.
The opponent changed, but the rest was much the same - another blown lead and Milwaukee home run in the 11th to end the game.
Lefty Scott Eyre again was culprit, continuing to fool no one - particularly opposing batters. Eyre surrendered the tying two runs and watched his ERA balloon to 15.00.
Oh, but it didn’t end there. Rocky Cherry, the call up from Triple A Des Moines, got rocked by a Prince Fielder home run in the 11th to take the loss. A rocky start, but the kid can now feel like he’s one of the boys.
