The Lineup, Please

This is your 2007 Chicago Cubs starting lineup - or at least for opening day.

* Alfonso Soriano, CF
* Matt Murton, LF
* Derrek Lee, IB
* Aramis Ramirez, 3B
* Jacque Jones, RF
* Michael Barrett, C
* Mark DeRosa, 2B
* Cesar Izturis, SS
* Carlos Zambrano, P

Chicago Cubs baseball manager Lou Piniella announced his starting lineup for Monday’s 1:20 season opener against the Cincinnati Reds. No surprises in the field with Alfonso Soriano manning center field, Matt Murton in left and Jacque Jones resuming his spot in right.

The only aspect of Piniella’s lineup that caught my eye was Murton batting second. With Soriano leading off - and with a career OBP of .325 - I thought DeRosa would be more of the candidate for the second spot.

To Murton’s credit, he’s shown himself to be a patient hitter at times and his OBP is slightly better than DeRosa’s with similar plate appearances.

The Cubs are facing right-hander Aaron Harang, a 16-game winner last season. I suspect when the Cubbies see a lefty DeRosa will move up into the second slot and Cliff Floyd will assume a spot lower in the lineup.
