Reds’ Protest Against Chicago Cubs Dropped

One of the little reported stories this past week that could have had major implications on the Central Division playoff chase was the Cincinnati Reds’ protest in last Monday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.

Cincinnati had filed the game under protest on the grounds Chicago manager Lou Piniella performed an illegal double switch in the sixth inning because he didn’t inform plate umpire Rick Reed before crossing the foul line. The Cubs rallied in the ninth to win the game 7-6, sparking the protest.

On Thursday, Bob DuPuy, baseball’s chief operating officer, denied the protest, leaving the Cub win intact.

Reed said Piniella wasn’t required to announce a double switch before crossing the foul line. Since it was the team’s first trip to the mound for that pitcher that inning the pitcher wasn’t automatically out of the game when the foul line was crossed by Piniella.
