It’s Official: Chicago Cubs to Meet D’Backs

The fate of the Chicago Cubs playoff future was decided with the conclusion of the major league baseball season today. As anticipated, the Cubs will meet the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday in the first round of the National League Division Series.

No time has been scheduled for the Wednesday contest as major league baseball awaits the outcome of Monday’s wild card tiebreaker between San Diego and Colorado. That game’s winner will meet Philadelphia in the other NLDS.

The Cubs, winners of the Central Division, finished the regular season with an 85-77 record, while Arizona holds the National League’s best mark at 90-72 and will have home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Chicago Cub baseball will be making its first post-season appearance since 2003 and only the 15th time in the last 105 years.

Carlos Zambrano is expected to meet Arizona’s Brandon Webb in Wednesday’s opener, while Thursday’s probables will pit two lefties - Ted Lilly for Chicago and former Milwaukee Brewer Doug Davis for the D’Backs.

Here’s a quick look at the pitching matchups:
