The Chicago Cubs shuffled out their new chorus line of players for their 2007 Wrigley Field opener today. Unfortunately for Cub fans, the routine looked much like the old dance and in the end, the song sounded much the same.
The scenario surrounding today’s home opener couldn’t have been choreographed better. A new manager combined with a bevy of changed faces set the stage for a fresh start and renewed hope.
But what we were reminded of today is that hope doesn’t always float. Sometimes it sinks to the pit of the stomach, usually followed by the thought of, “Here we go again.”
And today we did go again - back to the memories of every season past of blown holds, blown saves and blown chances.
It doesn’t help when the sucker punch is delivered by a banjo-hitting shortstop. And it certainly doesn’t ease the pain of knowing that the knockout blow came against the Cubs’ best set-up reliever.
Today’s loss was greater than a missed chance at victory. It was opportunity forsaken.
A Cubs win today would have slain the Ghosts of 2006 and shaken our doubts that somehow this season is going to be different. It would have proved that the off-season acquistions was money well spent, while watering the seeds of hope for 2007.
Instead, it only proved you can bring new faces to the dance, but if you don’t know the steps all the songs are the same.
