A June Boom?

Was it a boom or merely a bang?

Chicago Cubs baseball wrapped up its wild and woolly June with a 17-11 record. An amazing feat considering when the month began the Cubs couldn’t decide whom to hit - themselves, the other team or anything but opposing pitching.

In fact, it was more likely that Cubs baseball would have finished the month on a thud than either a boom or a bang. Or a snap, crackle or pop for that matter. Unless someone’s bones were involved.

Once the Cubs decided to combine their bats with their brawn, and their brains with their arms things got a whole lot better - quickly.

The Cubs’ June included among other things a seven-game win streak, sweeps of the Colorado Rockies and cross-town rival White Sox, two amazing come-from-behind victories and reaching a .500 won-lost record for the first time since they were 16-16 on May 10th. As if that weren’t enough, Chicago capped it off by taking two of three from the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers.

But June represented more than a climb up the NL Central Division standings. For this year’s Cubs it was an ascent on the ladder Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

The Cubs went from barely taking care of the basics, to what Maslow tagged, self-actualization. Or, in the Cubs’ case, a self realization of how good they can be and what they can achieve.

Which is a far cry from the self-destructing, on the verge of imploding team that began the month.

As all good Chicago Cub fans, we’ve grown accustomed to the swings and misses in outrageous defeats. But this is a new kind of schizophrenia - even for the Cubs.

As Chicago Cubs baseball approaches the 4th of July holiday, the team’s internal fireworks seem to be behind them. Now it’s time for the Cubs to light up the night time sky.
